I call the software MyRobotLab - and the idea is to create a service based framework to assist in creative machine control.  Amazing projects have been created with all sorts of micro-processors.  Arudino, PicAxe, Basic Stamps, Propeller, are just a few micro-processors which have become readily available.  They are relatively inexpensive and fairly simple to write code, but do not have the same computing power as an older PC.  In most cases (at the moment) this doesn't matter, however, as we try to create more complex systems where multiple micro-processors need coordination between one another (swarm), or where micro-processors dedicated to important but discreet tasks (ie balance, motor control, sensor input, speech recognition, object recognition, etc.. still need coordination) a PC seems like a logical choice.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The software is service based framework.  What does that mean?  Well, if you imagine a bunch of little building blocks.  Each Block has inputs and outputs.  And each block will take in the input and possibly send out some output.  Each block can run by itself or in congunction with other little blocks.  So, all these blocks are floating waiting for someone to connect the input of one from the output of the other.  These &amp;quot;blocks&amp;quot; are the Services and you can build more complex system by attaching services together.  I like diagrams so here is one I made. &lt;br /&gt;

* The framework language is Java. - the choice was done on the fact that it is fairly platform independent and there is an open-source version&lt;br /&gt;
* Arduino is the only board currently working, however, PicAxe could be coming shortly (the Borg grows!)&lt;br /&gt;
* Most Hardware communication is done through a serial interface to the micro-controller although the parallel port and other i/o hardware is supported&lt;br /&gt;

* RecorderPlayer - service which can record the messages (input/output) of other services&lt;br /&gt;
* RemoteAdapter - service which can allow multiple instances on remote computers to communicate with one another (distributed robot), or GUI control of a remote robot&lt;br /&gt;
*Sensor general digital sensor&lt;br /&gt;
